BPMN Training/Workshops

I have been providing training in BPMN since early 2007, through a variety of channels:

• Private 2-day classes at client site – Most training is this way
• Online/on-demand – Self-paced, Flash video, on BPMessentials.com
• Virtual classroom – Levels 1 and 2, with certification, 3 days @5 hours/day
• Public 2-day class at Creetion events in Netherlands

I used to do live 2-day public class at BPMInstitute, but no longer.  They continue to offer a class with the same name, but I do not recommend it; it is not the “real thing”.

All my BPMN training follows three important principles:

1. Shared understanding of BPMN models requires consistent application of a modeling methodology and elements of style.  The approach described in my book BPMN Method and Style forms the basis of the training.
2. Learning BPMN requires hands-on exercises.  It’s like learning a foreign language.  You might learn to read it from books, but to speak it demands active participation in the form of exercises.  All the classes and workshops include hands-on exercises in a BPMN tool, and those that offer certification feature more difficult post-class exercises.
3. BPMN can be used at multiple levels, but these levels must be aligned in order to get business and IT on the same page.  Level 1 uses a basic working set of shapes and symbols familiar to business, and is perfect for descriptive modeling and qualitative process analysis.  Level 2 uses a larger set, most notable intermediate events, important for precise description of exception handling.  BPMN Level 2 is the common process language shared by business and IT.  Level 3 – enabled by the new BPMN 2.0 standard – is executable process modeling completely in BPMN.  Our training is based on careful alignment of these levels so that modelers don’t have to start over when moving to the next process level.
